Assos: Venetian
Fort
A small road winds its way down to Assos on the islands northwest
coast to arrive at this small, unspoilt village. The pebbled beach
is overlooked by the Venetian Fort, which is situated on a rocky
peninsula across an isthmus from the village. Assos is popular
with day-trippers as there is not much accommodation in the village
itself. Situated high up on a rocky peninsula, the remains of
this Venetian Fort make for good exploring. The impressive position
of the fort was considered, in its day, to be unconquerable. Built
around 1595 it has since seen occupation by the French and Russians.
