The island has been shaped by a turbulent volcanic history evident from the black sand beaches to the impressive cliffs layered with lava that plunge dramatically into the incredibly blue sea. The capital is Thira and nestles on the rim of the volcano’s crater. It’s picturesque houses and churches harbour some excellent shops and lovely restaurants. Breathtaking sunsets, dramatic scenery and deep blue sea all contribute to making a visit to this island a unique experience.
